Zim Maize Forecast Down

The Commercial Farmers Union in Zimbabwe is forecast maize production down tens of thousands of tons this season. If they're right, Zimbabwe will face a second year of food shortages, after a drought caused serious hardship for farmers and poor households this season. The Commercial Farmers Union claims the drop in production is because farmers lack access to finance.

The shortfall will be particularly problematic for Zimbabwe at a time when foreign maize production has not been particularly good over the past season, suggesting that prices may be high and in-kind food aid in short supply.
