We need to talk about the DRC

Alex Engwete raising the alarm about the situation in the Kivus:

Incapable of protecting its citizens and its resources, the government
is now resorting to whiners' diplomacy--diplomatic irrelevancy, as it
were--begging the UN on both knees: to deal with the country's
problems; and to please ward off a menace called Rwanda!

Quite seriously, at some point somebody is going to have to have this conversation.

On a personal note, I'm miserable to hear that rebels who took the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in Epulu over the weekend have destroyed buildings and apparently killed okapis. The town is reported to be deserted. Protecting reserves while human communities burn is obviously controversial but this place was really incredibly special - a stunning corner of the African rainforests with real people, some of whom happen to be pygmies, and some of the only okapis left in the world.
