Illegal miners killed in Zambia

The question of illegal mining is a difficult one. There are those who would argue that the term "illegal miners" is a problem. After all, these are ordinary people trying to earn a living from the resources of their country. Unfortunately, they tend to be in contravension of laws that, fairly or unfairly, confine mining to the realm of large corporates. They also get killed far too often - probably because mining safety equipment is way beyond their means. In the DRC it's called artisanal mining, although that may change once multi-nationals like AngloGold get properly dug in.
