Potential political crisis as Malawi president dies
Malawian president, Bingu wa Mutharika, is reported to have died after suffering a heart attack yesterday. His death leaves a political crisis for the ruling party, which is probably why no official announcement of the death has yet been made. According to the constitution, the Vice-President takes over. However, Malawi's VP, Joyce Banda, was expelled from the party months and months ago over a succession battle. The ruling DPP have been trying to get her to leave the Vice-Presidency, on the argument that she shouldn't continue to hold the office if she wasn't in the party, but failed. Banda has since created her own political party, the People's Party and is set to run in presidential elections in 2014. It is unclear whether the cabinet will try to stop her taking over. The situation will be tense as things play out in the next few days.
