Power to the people
A cellphone company in Zimbabwe has found a gap they're planning to fill: power. Many people in Zimbabwe don't have access to the power-grid and/or have intermittent power due to supply and distribution problems. Econet Solar will provide them with solar power - enough to provide lighting to four 3mx3m rooms and charge a cellphone. Customers will pay for their power (pre-paying) as they would for pre-paid cellphone airtime. It'll be interesting to see if this takes off. Certainly more accessible for poor families than buying solar units. Perhaps an example of the market picking up the slack and providing an affordable, sustainable solution where state service delivery is inadequate?
