Workers in Zambia are striking and threatening strikes over wages just three weeks after the President Sata took office. Sata is scrambling to make changes as quickly as possible. The new labour minister claims strikes are spreading because workers were restricted from protesting in the former regime. And it appears to be working.
Many international commentators were impressed with the peaceful transition that took place in Zambia. This might be even more unusual - people holding their new leaders to account just weeks after coming to power. Wonder what would happen if this kind of pressure was put on every elected government?
