HIV and contraceptives

Very worrying results from a study published recently, suggesting that injectable contraceptives could increase HIV risk. Tom Paulson (Humanosphere) gives a great analysis of what is really going on here. Further study is, of course, needed. Sadly, various international media appear to be jumping to publish these results. Let's hope their doom and gloom scenarios of African women all giving up contraceptive use or all contracting HIV do not become a self-fulfilling prophecy thanks to their coverage. From the perspective of the many, many women who depend on contraceptives to control family size and reduce the risk of other illnesses, let's hope the more research happens really, really soon.
