Malawi protests - good and bad
Protest organisers in Malawi on Wednesday claimed victory in the three-day stay-away protest but reports suggest that many businesses were open on Thursday. The protests have been organised as a follow-up on July 20 protests that were marked by clashes between protesters and security forces. Protests were postponed in August when negotiations brokered by the UN began between government and protest/opposition groups. Negotiations recently broke down and protest organisers called on Malawians to stay home for three days to express their opposition to current government policy after government denied requests for permission to protest. It is unclear what the next move of protesters will be.
