NGOs in Malawi have called for an ICC investigation into president Bingu wa Mutharika after 19 people died in clashes between security forces and protesters last month. Organisers of the July 20 protest are reportedly still in hiding after receiving death threats. The calls include the Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister and the Inspector General of Police, recent focus of strike action over threats to academic freedom in the country.
Further mass action has been announced for 17 August if the government does not meet protesters' demands.
In other news, the ruling party has formally announced the president's younger brother as presidential candidate in the 2014 national elections.
