Foreign business owners prepare for looting

Foreign shop owners in Malawi, particularly Indian and Chinese business people, are reportedly increasing security around their shops ahead of the anticipated August 17th mass action. What looting took place during the July20 protests seemed to target, as well as ruling party buildings, foreign-owned businesses. The perception in Malawi has been that foreign business owners have exacerbated the forex shortages by sending money home.

Some investors have suspended operations until the situation calms down. Shops owners have either closed their shops or put in place plans to board up windows and hire armed security on the day of the protests. Civil society groups in Malawi who organised the protests in July have given the government until August 16th to act on their demands or face further protests.
