Families of those who died in last week's protests and church leaders have expressed dismay at the government's decision to prevent the nine dead in Mzuzu from being buried together. The government is apparently attempting to prevent the creation of a political shrine or the impression that those who died were martyrs in a struggle.
Mutharika is calling the protests and violence last week a 'failed coup' and blaming opposition leaders (including the VP) and civil society activists for the deaths. The opposition politicians in question do not appear to have been part of the protests. He as warned that anyone taking to the streets, "they (will) meet wrath of government".
Protest organisers said on Friday that they were taking the time to bury the dead before considering their next move.
