Zim elections for the sake of development - Mugabe

Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe claimed last week that elections must go ahead as soon as possible in the country, to end the unity government, in which, he claims, political positions are being used to undermine human development. Mugabe claims that "certain members of the Inclusive Government, like Finance Minister Tendai Biti, were working hard to frustrate programmes aimed at empowering people".

Mugabe and others are pushing for elections this year but opposition groups claim that electoral reforms have not gone far enough to make free and fair elections possible and the Finance Minister has stated that the country simply does not have the money to hold a presidential poll in 2011.
