Guardian's Datablog has a piece today on water-stress in the middle east and other places, highlighting the potential threat and, more importantly, linking to the real data.
Including this great map. Interestingly, it turns out that South Africa, Australia, India and Niger all face high levels of water-stress. For a sub-national (more specific) picture, check out this map (and article).
The risks and threat of water-scarcity are a little terrifying but, as the article points out, it's even more terrifying to think that the problems may be caused more by poor management than by absolute scarcity.
