Cash incentives to prevent HIV?
The idea of paying people not to get HIV has always made me a little uncomfortable. Having worked in the field for a while, I am fully aware of the complexity of preventing the high-risk behaviour that leads to HIV infection and addressing the myriad complex factors that lead to that high-risk behaviour. I'm also more than aware of the realities (and prevalence) of transactional sex in South Africa, particularly among youth in the highest-risk areas, including, unsurprisingly, urban informal settlements. I suppose it could be argued that desperate times call for desperate measures. Either way, probably a good thing that studies are being done, even if the subject is instinctively somehow problematic.
