Knowing stuff about Africa: ECOWAS

Like SADC, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was originally set up (founded 1975) as a body for regional economic integration but also plays other roles. In the past few weeks, for example, they have taken a strong stance on the situation in Cote d'Ivoire. Along with former regional colonial power, France, ECOWAS plays an important role in regional politics and economic decision-making, etc.

Member states of ECOWAS are:

Benin
Burkina Faso
Cabo Verde
Cote d'Ivoire
Gambia
Ghana
Guinee
Guinee Bissau
Liberia
Mali
Niger
Nigeria
Senegal
Sierra Leone
Togolese Republic
