What's almost as awesome as awesome maps?

Charts full of fun and important information.

Like this one showing the number of natural disasters reported by year between 1900 and 2009:

Or this one of people killed by natural disasters by year:

Or the number of people affected by natural disasters over the same time-span:

That's right: more natural disasters affecting more people with fewer fatalities. As much as it is terrible to see the number of people whose lives and livelihoods have been devastated by natural disasters in recent years, great to see that in the long-view humankind is doing better. Alternatively we're just keeping better records and things are just as bad as they've always been. May need a Gapminder visualisation to figure that one out.
