Election Season: Africa - Niger's referendum

Results are in and Nigeriens have votes overwhelmingly in favour of the new constitution. The turnout was lower than the junta had hoped (52 per cent) but of those who voted, 90 per cent gave their support to the new constitution. Among other measures, the new constitution limits the president to a five year term, renewable only once.

Niger will now vote in new parliamentary and presidential elections 31 January, with the aim of returning the country to civilian rule by April 2011.
