“Come with me to the wonderful world of statistics...”

I adore Hans Rosling. Seriously, I'm a bit of a groupie. Particularly loving this talk for the great disaggregation of sub-Saharan Africa and the ultimate (and cannot-be-made-often-enough) point that stabilizing world population is a matter of girls' education.

In other stats related news, StatsSA have announced their 2011 census. In this press release they acknowledge the important role played by Trevor Manuel (another of my favourite people) in making it possible. The South African government has allocated R1.2 billion and StatsSA is negotiating for more. The census will involve 120 000 fieldworkers covering more than 14 million households. This will be the biggest (and most exciting) census ever conducted in South African and will finally give us some slightly firmer numbers than the guestimates we've largely been working on for the last few years. Bring on Census 2011 and yay for statistics!
